Steelers to Work Out Son of former NFL Star
The Pittsburgh Steelers are working out former University of Arizona edge rusher Taylor Upshaw, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston. Upshaw is the son of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers standout Regan Upshaw.
Veteran Steelers outside linebacker Markus Golden suddenly retired on Friday, so the team is in need of a pass rusher.
Golden spent the 2023 season with the Steelers, but had been a free agent since his contract had expired in March. Golden, 33, played in 16 games for the Steelers last season as the club’s No. 3 outside linebacker. He recorded 20 tackles, six tackles for loss, four sacks, one pass defense and one fumble recovery.
With Golden retiring, Jeremiah Moon, Kyron Johnson, Julius Welschof and DeMarvin Leal are competing for the No. 4 OLB spot.
Upshaw started all 13 games on the defensive line for the Wildcats in 2023, recording a team-high 8.5 sacks, a mark that tied for fourth in the Pac-12. He also made 31 total tackles (16 solo, 15 assists) with 11.5 tackles for loss, tied for third in the Pac-12, forced one fumble, six quarterback hurries, and one pass breakup.
Upshaw was a four-year letterman at Michigan (2019-2022) before transferring to Arizona. He appeared in 37 games in his career along the defensive line with two starts.
In 2022, Upshaw appeared in all 14 games along the defensive line; made 12 tackles with 4.5 for loss including two sacks, one interception, and one quarterback hurry to earn his fourth varsity letter. He shared Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance against Illinois.
Upshaw was a three-star recruit coming out of Braden River High School in 2019. He was ranked the No. 66 defensive end nationally and the 118th-best player in Florida.
Upshaw’s dad, Regan, played for five different teams over a nine-year NFL career, most notably with the Buccaneers. Regan Upshaw recorded 34.5 sacks in his NFL career, 14.5 of those sacks came with the Bucs in 1997 and 1998. Upshaw appeared in a Super Bowl with the Oakland Raiders in 2002, but fell short to the Buccaneers, 48-21.
