At the pro day, some notable names stand out in positions of need. The biggest of which is a potential pick at No, 17 overall with do-it-all defensive lineman Lukas Van Ness. Van Ness is young but has played on the edge and interior. The Steelers could use help at both spots, though it is still uncertain where the team would see Van Ness if they did pick him. But his raw athleticism is extremely notable.
Meanwhile, linebacker Jack Campbell could be the option to help the inside linebacker room get some youth alongside Cole Holcomb and Elandon Roberts. Campbell tested like a freak at the NFL Combine and saw his stock soar ever since. As one of the few linebackers in the class projected to go in the Top 50, he is a significant name.
Last but not least, defensive back Riley Moss and tight end Sam LaPorta are fascinating players, Moss is a physical, downhill blitzer with inside-out versatility on the back end. He will remind many fans of Mike Hilton, but Moss is bigger and has experience pushing outside and to safety. LaPorta is another player out of the tight-end factory in Iowa. He is young as well, but the tape is strong.
This is yet another pro day the Steelers brass hit, along with Georgia, Clemson, and Michigan. Anytime they stop on the trail, that is notable, but Iowa is not in their usual rotation. So, to see them go out of their way raises some buzzers right away. As fro who they were watching? It could have been any of them, but don’t discount Van Ness in this scenario.
