Steelers Touted as Top Landing Spot for All-Pro Wide Receiver

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan failed to bolster the wide receiver corps in 2024, but he could correct the fatal flaw on the roster by landing Tampa Bay Buccaneers All-Pro wide receiver Chris Godwin in free agency this upcoming March.

Last Word On Sports’ Jack Aaron believes the Steelers are an ideal landing spot for the Super Bowl champion wideout. Aaron could also see Godwin signing with the Baltimore Ravens or staying in Tampa Bay.

“Although he’s only 28, Godwin has managed to play eight NFL seasons, though multiple have ended due to serious lower-body injuries,” Aaron wrote. “Though teams might approach him cautiously because of this, he can still be the quarterback’s best friend, as a sure-handed slot receiver. He could be a fit for any team looking to diversify their offense, taking pressure off notable stars.”

Godwin was on pace for one the best seasons of his career before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in Week 7. Godwin recorded 50 receptions for 576 yards (11.5 average) and five touchdowns, an average of 82 yards and seven catches per game. He ranked second in the NFL in receiving yards at the time of his injury.

Godwin, who underwent surgery on his dislocated ankle, is expected to make a full recovery for 2025.

Godwin, 28, was selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by Tampa Bay. In 2019, he made the Pro Bowl and was named second-team All-Pro. The following season, he played a key part in helping the Bucs win a Super Bowl title.

The Steelers currently have one of the worst wide receiver corps in the NFL. That was evident during the three games that No. 1 wide receiver George Pickens was sidelined due to a hamstring injury. Calvin Austin has stepped up this year, but other than Austin, there’s been very little production from the secondary receivers.

If the Steelers can pair Pickens with a top-flight receiver like Godwin, things should dramatically open up for the rest of the offense. Pickens, Godwin and Austin as a trio would be a solid arsenal for whoever is the Steelers’ starting quarterback in 2025.
