The Pittsburgh Steelers are among the teams that have reached out about the asking price for two wide receivers that are currently on the trade market. The Steelers have been in communication regarding Denver Broncos wide receiver Tim Patrick and Houston Texans wide receiver John Metchie III as the roster cut-down date approaches, multiple sources told Steelers Now.

The market for Metchie appears to be robust. According to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, multiple teams have reached out to the Texans about the availability of the former second-round draft pick.

Metchie missed his entire rookie season with a knee injury and then a cancer diagnosis. He returned in Week 2 last year, but had been passed on the Houston depth chart by players like Nico Collins and Tank Dell.

With the Texans going out this season and trading for Stefon Diggs and Ben Skowronek, Houston appears to have far too many wide receivers to fit onto their 53-man roster. Metchie is entering the third year of his rookie contract, and has two seasons remaining on that deal. He’s owed a total of $3.2 million over the next two seasons.

Tim Patrick was expected to be the starting slot receiver in Denver, alongside Courtland Sutton and John Reynolds, but it appears that 2023 second-round pick Marvin Mims and fourth-round rookie Troy Franklin might be pushing their way into his playing time. Franklin is the college teammate of rookie quarterback Bo Nix.

Mike Klis of 9News in Denver reported that the Broncos are seeking to move on from Patrick because of the rest of the team’s depth. Patrick caught on with the Broncos in 2017 after being cut by the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent.

Patrick played his first game for the Broncos in 2018 and broke out in 2020, the first of two 700-yard seasons for him 2020 and 2021. He missed all of his last two seasons due to injury, suffering a torn ACL in 2022 and a torn Achilles in 2023. Patrick signed a one-year contract extension with the Broncos this offseason and is due $1.125 million.

The Steelers have been seeking wide receiver depth since trading away Diontae Johnson for cornerback Donte Jackson back in March. The club also continues to be interested in acquiring star receiver Brandon Aiyuk from the San Francisco 49ers.
