Steelers Try Out Former Slippery Rock Star
Former Slippery Rock University consensus All-American Kyle Sheets tried out with the Steelers as the team searches for WR depth.
The Steelers tried out eight players on Tuesday, including former Slippery Rock University star wide receiver Kyle Sheets.
The Springboro, Pa. native began his NFL odyssey by signing a rookie free agent contract with the New Orleans Saints after the 2024 NFL Draft. The Saints cut Sheets after spring minicamp practices.
Sheets then hooked up with the Kansas City Chiefs for training camp and played in two preseason games. He went without a reception, and the Chiefs waived him on August 26.
While Sheets doesn’t have the pedigree that comes with an FBS Power Four or Group of Five scholarship, his size draws attention from NFL teams at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds. He used that size to put up huge numbers as a member of The Rock.
Kyle Sheets caught 76 passes for 1,186 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2023, for an average of 15.6 yards per reception at Slippery Rock. He received consensus All-American honors and All-SR1 and PSAC-West awards.
The try-out with the Steelers comes as the team continues its search for wide receiver depth. After trading Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers, the Steelers started the 2024 season without a legitimate WR2. Trade rumors swirled around Brandon Aiyuk, with Aiyuk ultimately signing a new contract with the San Francisco 49ers.
The Steelers may be interested in a trade for Las Vegas Raiders wide Davante Adams. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Adams told the Raiders he would prefer a trade. As of now, no trade is imminent.
Tuesday’s try-out also included two other wide receivers—Josh Ali and Andy Isabella.
Isabella is a former 2019 second-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals. He has some NFL experience, catching 33 passes during his five-year career.
Ali signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 2022 as an undrafted free agent. He played in two NFL games, receiving one target.
