Steelers Try Out Rookie Cornerback, Edge Rusher

Steelers 2024 NFL Draft Nathan Pickering Mississippi State

The Pittsburgh Steelers tried out two players on Thursday, as the team continues to look for talent to sign for the 2025 season.

According to a report by Howard Balzer of CardsWire, the Steelers hosted edge rusher Nathan Pickering and cornerback Mikey Victor for tryouts on Thursday.

Pickering, 24, is a rookie out of Mississippi State. He’s a 6-foot-4 314-pound defensive end that went undrafted this spring and spent time with the Seattle Seahawks this offseason. He signed with the Seahawks on May 3 and was waived with an injury designation on Aug. 14. He did not sign with another team after the injury.

In five seasons at Mississippi State, Pickering appeared in 51 games and made 30 starts. After playing as a reserve in his first two seasons, and earning an SEC All-Freshman Team nod in 2019, Pickering started all 13 games in 2021, and became a three-year starter.

He recorded a career high of four sacks and seven tackles for loss in 2021. He had his most tackles, 44, as a redshirt senior in 2023.

Victor is a 6-foot-2, 205-pound rookie cornerback out of Alabama State. He signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent, but was released on Aug. 26. Victor played in three preseason games with the Patriots, finishing with four tackles and one pass defended. He did not sign with another team since being released by New England.

Victor spent two seasons at Alabama State, playing in 19 games. He recorded 55 tackles, one tackle for loss, 15 passes defended and three interceptions. He was a finalist for the Aeneas Williams Award for the best defensive back at an HBCU. Before his time with the Hornets, Victor played at UNLV and Ventura College.

His older brother, Akeem Victor, was a sixth-round draft pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2018. His father and cousin both played college basketball.

The Steelers can begin to sign players to future contracts for the 2025 season after they are eliminated from the postseason.
