AT STAKE

The Steelers have put themselves in very nice playoff position with their 7-4 record and hold important tiebreakers, as well. But a loss to a bottom-of-the-barrel Cardinals team could put a wrench in things.

They currently have a 72% chance of making the playoffs, according to the New York Times / The Upshot playoff simulator. A win will bring the Steelers up to 79%, but a loss will take them all the way back to 60%.

Perhaps as importantly, the Steelers offense will need to show that the progress gained last week against Cincinnati by the unit was real. They’ll be facing one of the worst defenses in the NFL, so there shouldn’t be any excuses. The Cardinals are 31st in EPA per play on defense, and equally poor against the run and the pass.

TRANSACTIONS

Linebacker Kyron Johnson was elevated from the practice squad for this game.

The Steelers signed wide receiver Jacob Copeland to their practice squad and released safety Jalen Elliott from the practice squad this week.

THE LAST TIME

The Steelers visited the Cardinals in 2019, winning 23-17 with Devlin Hodges as the starting quarterback. Hodges completed 16 of 19 for 152 yards and a touchdown pass to Diontae Johnson, who had a monster game.

Johnson caught six passes for 60 yards and the score and he also returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown.

STEELERS-CARDINALS SERIES

The Steelers have a 35-23-3 all-time record against the Cardinals, in all their iterations, dating back to 1933. Since the Cardinals moved to Arizona, the Steelers are 6-3 against the club.

The teams have infrequently played in Pittsburgh in recent years. The Steelers are 2-0 against Arizona at Heinz Field/Acrisure Stadium, winning games in 2003 and 2015. They were 1-0 at Three Rivers Stadium, winning in 1985.

The last time the Cardinals won in Pittsburgh came at Pitt Stadium in 1969, a 27-14 win on Oct.

PITTSBURGH CONNECTIONS

The Cardinals have long been a “Pittsburgh West” for former Steelers, but the connections seem to have run dry under the new front office led by Monti Ossenfort and head coach Jonathan Gannon.

Pass game specialist Spencer Whipple is the son of former Steelers quarterbacks coach Mark Whipple and was born in Gibsonia.

Strength and conditioning coach Buddy Morris is a South Park native that had three tenures as Pitt before moving to the NFL.

Running back James Conner is a Steelers, Pitt and McDowell High School alum. Tackle Kevin Beachum started his career with the Steelers as a seventh-round pick in 2012. Wide receiver Dan Chisena was with the Steelers in training camp this year.
