Steelers Waive Linebacker after Suffering Serious Knee Injury
The Pittsburgh Steelers have waived outside linebacker David Perales one day after he suffered an apparently serious knee injury.
UNITY TWP., Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers have waived outside linebacker David Perales with an injury designation on Thursday after the second-year defender suffered an apparently serious knee injury during practice on Wednesday.
Perales was injured while attempting to tackle Steelers running back Najee Harris during the seven shots drill of practice on Wednesday. He came up limping and grabbing his knee before hobbling off the field. He was then taken off the field on a cart.
The Steelers lost two linebackers in practice on Wednesday, as Kyron Johnson left practice later in the day. With those two sidelined, the Steelers re-signed veteran free agent Markus Golden on Thursday, and waived Perales to make room on the roster.
Perales will now be subject to waivers until 4 p.m. on Friday. If he clears waivers, he will revert back to the Steelers injured reserve list. Though the extent of his injury has not been reported, it seems unlikely that he will play for the team again this season.
The 6-foot-3, 255-pound Perales is in his second pro season out of Fresno State. He first joined the Steelers as an undrafted free agent last spring, and spent all summer with the club. Last preseason, Perales played in all three games, earning 100 snaps and recording three tackles and two quarterback hits.
He was released after training camp and had two stints on the Steelers’ practice squad before being re-signed for the 2024 season in January.
Perales had a six-year collegiate career, starting with Merced Junior college and transferring up to Sacramento State at the FCS level and then Fresno State at the Group of Five level. As a redshirt senior in 2022, he recorded 11.5 sacks, 16 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles in 14 games.
