Steelers Will Not Renew Contract of Offensive Coordinator Randy Fichtner

The Steelers will not renew the contract of offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner, the team announced on Thursday.

Fichtner, 57, spent three seasons as the Steelers’ offensive coordinator. His contract had expired at the end of the 2020 season.

“Randy and I have been in Pittsburgh since I hired him in 2007, but our relationship began well before that,” head coach Mike Tomlin said in a press release. “He has been a friend of mine for years and wish his family nothing but the best, and I am eternally grateful for our relationship on and off the field.”

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Fichtner originally came to Pittsburgh in 2007 after collegiate stops at Michigan, USC, UNLV, Memphis, Arkansas State and his alma mater, Purdue.

In Pittsburgh, Fichtner was wide receivers coach from 2007-09, quarterbacks coach from 2010-17, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2018-19 and just offensive coordinator last season.

In Fichtner’s first season as offensive coordinator, the Steelers finished eighth in the NFL with a 26.8 points per game scoring average. That figure plummeted in 2019, when the team was forced to play without starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and finished 27th with 18.1 points per game. With Roethlisberger back in 2020, the offense made a partial recovery, scoring 26 points per game for 12th in the league.
