The Pittsburgh Steelers will wear their throwback jerseys for Sunday night’s game against the New York Jets at Acrisure Stadium, the team announced on Tuesday. This Steelers will honor the 50th Anniversary of Super Bowl IX this weekend, so it’s fitting that the Steelers will wear their block number throwbacks that were featured in the Super Steelers era of the 1970s. The Steelers donned the block numbers from 1969-1996.

“As we approach the 50th Anniversary of Super Bowl IX we think it is a good time to celebrate the team that ushered in an era of great success,” Steelers president Art Rooney II said, via the team’s official website. “We’re excited about being able to celebrate that pivotal time in Steelers history and honor the team that started it all.”

In addition, the jersey will have a commemorative patch honoring the 50th Anniversary of Super Bowl IX, with the team’s Super Bowl IX ring part of the design. Compared to their regular uniforms, the Steelers’ throwbacks feature block numbers and do not have the team’s logo on the left chest.

The Steelers will honor the Super Bowl IX team at halftime of the game, and the team’s annual Alumni Dinner will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Acrisure Stadium.

This is the first alternate uniform that Pittsburgh has worn this season. They will wear black helmets accompanying it, as they have done since the 1960s. The team has worn only black helmets since 1962. They wore gold before that, notably in the 1940s and 50s. The Steelers will wear gray facemasks on their helmets for Sunday night’s game as well, the same color they wore in 1974. That’s a new change to the throwbacks.

The Steelers are 4-0 when wearing the block number throwbacks. They first wore them in 2018 against the Cleveland Browns and then in 2019 against the Los Angeles Rams. They brought the unis back in 2022 for the 50th Anniversary of the Immaculate Reception and honoring late Hall of Famer Franco Harris against the Las Vegas Raiders. And then last year they wore them against the Green Bay Packers.

J.J. Watt would like to see the Steelers wear the block number jerseys full time.

“If I could only pick one, there’s so many good ones. I am personally partial to the Steelers block number throwback. I think the block number should be their main jersey, I think it’s just a classic, iconic. Makes me think of Mean Joe Greene, makes me think of those great Steelers teams. So I love a nice classic,” Watt said on NFL on CBS this past Sunday.
