T.J. Watt Sets Yet Another Steelers Record

T.J. Watt is already the Pittsburgh Steelers’ sack king.

Unsurprisingly, the all-world quarterback chaser gets to the passer at an unmatched clip. The numbers show it.

By pulling down Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts twice in the first half of Sunday night’s heavyweight bout, Watt became the first Steelers defender to record 10 or more sacks in six different campaigns. Watt has 11.5 sacks this season.

Watt passed up James Harrison to become the Steelers’ all-time sacks leader last season.

A four-time first-team Associated Press All-Pro, Watt entered the game against the Eagles as one of the NFL’s top sack-getters. Cincinnati’s Trey Hendrickson started the day with a league-best 12.5, while Cleveland’s Myles Garrett — a Watt contemporary, if there is one — and Denver’s Nik Bonitto had 11 each.

Earlier this season in a Steelers loss to Dallas, Watt became the second-fastest to record 100 career sacks, taking 109 games to do so. He racked up nearly 1/4 of those during the 2021 season, a go-round in which he had 22.5 sacks. That tied former New York Giant Michael Strahan for most in a single campaign.

Watt passed up Trace Armstong (106 sacks), Khalil Mack (106.5), and Pat Swilling (107.5) to hop to 31st on the NFL’s all-time sack leaders chart. Watt is now chasing Greg Townsend and Calais Campbell (109.5). The latter is currently playing with the Miami Dolphins in his 17th professional season. Mack is also still active, suiting up for the Los Angeles Chargers.

Watt exited the game in the fourth quarter, coming up lame and grabbing at his lower left leg after trying to get around Lane Johnson. He was walking under his on power on the sideline in the waning minutes of the loss. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin termed it as a low-ankle injury after the game.
