Texans Cut Ties with Former Steelers Cornerback

The Houston Texans have released former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Anthony Averett, the team announced on Monday.
Averett, 30, spent much of the 2024 season with the Steelers. He first joined the team as a veteran tryout at rookie minicamp last May. Averett impressed there, and earned a contract.
He stayed with the Steelers throughout training camp and the preseason, where he played in two games, making three tackles and one pass defensed. According to Pro Football Focus, he was targeted just once as a pass defender, and did not allow a reception.

He was released by the Steelers on Aug. 20 and re-signed to the practice squad. He stayed there until a practice injury caused him to be placed on the injured reserve list on Oct. 20.
The Steelers released Averett in January, and he signed with the Texans practice squad just after the end of the regular season. He was not active for either of Houston’s playoff games, but re-signed to the team on a future contract for the 2025 season in January.
The Texans released Averett among three moves on Monday, additionally cutting ties with safety Brandon Hill and wide receiver Kearis Jackson.
Before coming to Pittsburgh, Averett was drafted in the fourth round out of Alabama by the Baltimore Ravens. He spent four seasons in Baltimore, one with the Las Vegas Raiders and split 2023 between the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions.
