Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers told Aditi Kinkhabwala of CBS Sports that he had seven formal meetings at the NFL Combine, but only two – the Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders – did not put him on the whiteboard. He said they were far more focused on him as a human.

“It was great,” Ewers said of his meeting with the Steelers. “Getting to talk with coach Mike Tomlin. Just getting to know him and him getting to know me.”

Ewers said Tomlin even asked him about his major and his GPA during the interview.

“It was funny, we started talking about my major. It’s like what Cardale Jones said, we didn’t go to college to play school. But, no, it was good getting to talk to him.”

Ewers was a physical culture and sports major and finished with a GPA around 3.3-3.4.

“He just wrote it down in his notebook,” Ewers said. “You know what they say, Cs get degrees. But, I didn’t finish school yet.”

Ewers expects to have more conversations with the Steelers as the pre-draft process continues.

“They didn’t put me on the (white)board. Them and one other team didn’t put me on the board. I think they were just really trying to get to know me,” Ewers said. “I know they’re going to be at the pro day for me. I’m sure we’ll have conversations after, before then.”

Ewers, 21, completed 65.8% of his passes for 3,4722 yards with 31 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and a passer rating of 149.0 last season.

Ewers tossed five touchdowns against Florida and had three touchdowns apiece against Michigan and Arizona State in the College Football Playoff last season. Ewers struggled against powerhouses like Georgia and Ohio State, however. Completing 75 of 128 passes with five touchdowns, four interceptions while being sacked 15 times.

Overall, Ewers held a 27-9 record as a starter at Texas. He threw for 9,128, 68 touchdowns and 24 interceptions during his three seasons in Austin. He has the third-most passing yards and touchdowns in Texas history.

Ewers will throw at the NFL Combine, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Pelissero also notes that Ewers is healthy after playing the entire 2024 season with a torn oblique suffered in Week 2 against Michigan. Ewers has been working with former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy ahead of the combine, per Pelissero.

“McCarthy said he’s been really impressed with Quinn Ewers as a young man and the attentiveness that he has,” Pelissero said. “… This is an opportunity here for Quinn Ewers to come out and maybe establish himself as QB3 if not QB2, or (QB1).”

Ewers could end being the No. 3 quarterback in this year’s class, behind Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward. He could rise up team’s boards, if he shows out at the Combine and his pro day. Ewers is a talented, point guard-style quarterback prospect. His pro comp is Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield.
