Pittsburgh Steelers fans–and football fans alike for that matter–don’t exactly have polarizing opinions on NFL Officiating. Much of the time, fans want to see accountability for perceived biased or missed calls. On Wednesday, reports surfaced that the NFL took steps in that direction and removed three officials from the professional field.

According to reports, the three referees removed from professional calls are: second-year umpire James Carter, third-year line judge Robin DeLorenzo, and first-year down judge Robert Richeson.

This comes as one of the first big courses of action taken by Ramon George who was hired to his role of Vice President of NFL Officiating last summer. According to FootballZebras, George has made a push for accountability and is shaking up the culture of officiating.

Among these culture changes, George reportedly wants to enhance the use of data analysis, likely relating to performance, and wants to ensure there are no “favorites.”

This type of enforcement ought to be music to the ears of football fans who buy into the idea that referees play favorites both on and off the field. Regardless, as George heads into his second year on the job, there might be more interesting changes that could impact the field of play.
