The Tennessee Titans have promoted assistant coach Shane Bowen to defensive coordinator, the team announced on Friday.
The Titans had previously interviewed Steelers senior defensive assistant Teryl Austin for the position.
Bowen has been with the Titans since 2018 as outside linebackers coach. Before that, he served as a defensive assistant for the Houston Texans in 2016-17 and worked at the collegiate level for Kennesaw State, Ohio State and his alma mater, Georgie Tech. The 34-year-old Bowen is a Pickerington, Ohio native.
The Titans did not have a defensive coordinator in 2020 after Dean Pees retired last January, with head coach Mike Vrabel serving in the role.
Austin just finished his second season with the Steelers after coming over from Cincinnati, where he was the Bengals’ defensive coordinator under Marvin Lewis in 2018. Austin was also an NFL defensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions from 2014-17.
