Two Eagles Fined Heavily for Fight with Steelers
Four players were fined by the National Football League for the fight that broke out in the first quarter of last Sunday’s game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles, the league announced on Saturday.
Steelers tight end Darnell Washington and wide receiver Calvin Austin III and Eagles cornerback Darius Slay and Quinyon Mitchell were all fined for their actions in the first quarter last week.
The skirmish started when Washington blocked Slay out of the back of the end zone during a Najee Harris rushing play down the near goal line. Washington continued to block slay after the whistle blew, prompting the first flag or unnecessary roughness.
Slay then punched at Washington. Austin jumped in and pushed Slay, prompting Mitchell to go after him.
The initial calls both went against the Steelers, and officials during the game said that video review did not show any Philadelphia players throwing punches. Obviously, that was not the case, as the NFL came down harder on the Eagles players for their actions than the Steelers in their post-game analysis.
Mitchell and Slay were each fined $14,069 for unsportsmanlike conduct. Washington was fined $6,760 and Austin $6,173.
The four fines on one play were just part of the supplementary discipline handed down from Sunday’s game. Eagles defensive back Sydney Brown was fined $6,981 for unnecessary roughness (use of helmet) for a kickoff return tackle of Cordarrelle Patterson. Eagles linebacker Zack Baun was fined $8,888 for a hip-drop tackle.
Finally, defensive tackle Jalen Carter was fined $11,817 for his head-slap personal foul against Steelers tight end Connor Heyward during a punt — another play that was officiated controversially during the game.
