Watch: Justin Fields Builds Chemistry with George Pickens in Workout

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields and wide receiver George Pickens are getting a head start in building their rapport before the start of training camp, which is 13 days away.

G.O.A.T. Farm Sports on X shared a video of Fields throwing passes to Pickens at Elite Week at Del Valle High School in Texas. A number of NFL stars are at the event — Deshaun Watson, Kyle Pitts and Calvin Ridley to name a few.

Pickens even displayed that he has a cannon. Maybe Pickens can serve as the Steelers emergency quarterback.

Pickens also worked on his routes with Pitts and Ridley, while Fields did QB footwork drills with Jordan Love.

Before starring at Ohio State, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields spent one season with the Georgia Bulldogs in 2018. During that time, head coach Kirby Smart was recruiting Pickens out of Hoover High School in Alabama. Pickens committed to Georgia, but Fields left for Columbus in 2019.

The two crossed paths in high school, however. Fields and Pickens go way back.

“I knew George before y’all knew George,” Fields said at OTAs, via Jarrett Bailey of Behind the Steel Curtain. “I’ve known George since high school. He’s always been the same. Just a freak athlete, crazy receiver. You can just throw it up there when nobody’s open and he’s most likely going to come down with it. He’s the same player that I’ve known since high school.”

Pickens has worked on adding to his game as a route runner and diversifying his route tree in game situations this offseason. He’s also put in work with the “Route God” down in Florida. The Route God, also known as James Everett, also trains Diontae Johnson.

“I worked on quicker routes,” Pickens said. “You know, I feel like I’m already dominant at the line, so it’s about getting quicker, really.”

Fields never had a receiver like Pickens in Chicago. He was throwing to the likes of Darnell Mooney, Chase Claypool and Equanimeous St. Brown for the most part. Tight end Cole Kmet was his best receiver before DJ Moore arrived in 2023.
