What Does New Steelers OC Arthur Smith Have Cooking?
Steelers Morning Rush: What have we learned so far about Arthur Smith, how he coaches, and the way his offense will look this season?
Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single topic of news surround the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League.
Today, Alan dives into the new offensive being installed by Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, and how it’s going to be similar and/or different from both what the Steelers did under previous offensive coordinator Matt Canada, and what Smith has done at his past stops with the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons. Smith will obviously bring the same kind of run and play-action heavy mindset that he’s had at previous stops, but it won’t be exactly the same, either. He wants to make changes to the plan that didn’t work all that well in Atlanta, and he’s taking some of the best parts of the previous Pittsburgh offense.
Alan also broke down what he’s learned about Smith’s personality, how he’s interacting with the players, and why he thinks Smith is getting much better buy-in from the Steelers players than his predecessor, Matt Canada did. Smith’s competitive streak and ability to communicate and motivate players has been on display early in training camp.
