What’s Next for Russell Wilson after Full Participation in Steelers Practice?
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson was a full participant in practice on Wednesday.

PITTSBURGH — As promised, quarterback Russell Wilson was a full participant in practice on Wednesday as the Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback continued his rehabilitation from his second calf injury of the 2024 season.
Wilson was a full participant for the first time on Wednesday after having been limited in every practice since re-injuring his right calf in the week before the Steelers’ season opener against the Atlanta Falcons.
Head coach Mike Tomlin said on Tuesday that the Steelers will make a plan for the rest of the week based on how Wilson’s calf responds to his workload on Wednesday.
Wilson worked with the second team on Wednesday, as expected. Tomlin said that was done so as to not interrupt the preparation of Justin Fields. Fields has started all five games, and has completed a career-high 67.6% of his passes, and thrown five touchdowns compared to one interception, but the Steelers have not had a prolific passing offense overall. Fields is 21st in passing yards and 20th in yards per attempt.
Tomlin would not commit to a course of action on Tuesday, but it seems safe to continue to expect Fields to be the team’s starter, so long as Wilson’s work is exclusively with the second team.
With it now being five weeks since he last fully practiced, and with Wilson also missing a big part of the early portion of training camp, a level of rust may also be a factor.
It seems as if at the very least by this time next week, Tomlin is going to have to make a commitment either Wilson or Fields at quarterback.
