WVU CB Beanie Bishop is Ready to Hit Ground Running with Steelers
Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Beanie Bishop is ready to hit the ground running, and he might have a large role for an undrafted rookie.
PITTSBURGH — West Virginia cornerback Beanie Bishop is a rarity in that he’s an undrafted free agent rookie that might be seeing a lot of playing time in 2024. The 5-foot-9 cornerback is already near the top of the team’s depth chart as a slot cornerback, and the Steelers may be turning him for a far bigger role than most UDFAs rate.
Bishop said it’s nothing that he hasn’t done before. He arrived at Western Kentucky as an unheralded recruit and carved out a role right away, then did the same as a transfer to Minnesota in 2022 and West Virginia in 2023. With the Steelers, he’ll also be making the transition to the inside at the slot cornerback position.
“That’s a spot that I can play in and that’s a need for the team,” Bishop said. “Coming out of high school, I wasn’t a highly recruited guy. I only had one FBS offer. I’m kind of taking the same approach of being a smaller guy or a guy that was overlooked and always playing with a chip on my shoulder.”
Bishop isn’t the only one that thinks he’ll be ready to play right away.
“I canโt tell you how excited we were to have an opportunity to sign Beanie Bishop after the draft,” general manager Omar Khan said. “We had him here for a visit. When he was here, we talked about our defense and how he would fit in. We really felt like he was a guy that could come in here and compete.”
