Hunter Renfrow Tabbed as Potential WR Target for Steelers

Steelers WR Hunter Renfrow

The wide receiver market continues to dwindle, and the Pittsburgh Steelers currently don’t have a legitimate No. 2 wide  receiver on their roster. Along with slot cornerback, receiver is the Steelers most glaring hole heading into the 2024 season.

Unless they pull off a massive trade for Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and Courtland Sutton, the Steelers will probably have to settle for just an adequate veteran option. There’s just not a lot out there. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report thinks former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow could fit the bill for the Steelers.

“(Roman) Wilson should start in the middle with George Pickens and, likely, Van Jefferson on the perimeter. However, it would behoove Pittsburgh to add some additional depth to the receiver room,” Knox wrote.

“Hunter Renfrow remains available, and he’s only a couple of seasons removed from his 2021 Pro Bowl campaign. While injuries and a general lack of playing time limited the 28-year-old to only 585 yards over the past two seasons, he racked up 103 catches and 1,038 yards in 2021.

“Adding Renfrow would give Pittsburgh another viable slot option. It would provide valuable depth while potentially unlocking the ability to move Wilson around the formation.”

Since scheduling a visit with Mike Williams before he signed with the New York Jets and talking terms with Tyler Boyd earlier in the free agent process, the Steelers have not been definitively connected to any free agent wide receivers.

The Steelers have been in the market for a wide receiver since trading Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers in March. They’ve struck out on free agent Mike Williams and have hit an impasse with Tyler Boyd, missing Williams, who signed with the Jets. The Steelers have also kicked the tires on San Francisco star Brandon Aiyuk, who the 49ers insist they are not trading. But Courtland Sutton might be the most intriguing of the options for who this could be.

Tyler Boyd, who the Pittsburgh Steelers had an interest in, still remains. But Odell Beckham Jr. is now off the market. Others, such as D.J. Chark and Michael Gallup, also signed new deals this past week.

“We feel good about where we’re at, but obviously there’s still some unfinished business until we get into the season and we start winning football games and we reach our goal, which is to win a Super Bowl,” Khan said on Friday in an appearance on The Jim Rome Show.

Agreed… Hunter would be a good addition but even Hunter would respect The Steelers’ process of attempting to haul in a big, BIG catch first…

They don’t need another slot receiver! They need a big bodied outside receiver to go with Pickens, and let Wilson be the slot receiver!
