Alex Highsmith was confident all along that a deal would get done between him and the Pittsburgh Steelers on a contract extension before the start of training camp, and he was steadfast in his stance that Pittsburgh is where he wants to be long term.

Wednesday, he got his wish, as ink got put to paper on a four-year contract extension that will keep Highsmith in Pittsburgh through 2027.

“This means everything,” Highsmith said to Steelers.com, just moments after signing his contract. “I know I am a Pittsburgh Steeler through and through, and just to be a part of this amazing organization for four more years means the world to me, to my wife, to my whole family. This is where I want to be. This is where I want to play ball. I am unbelievably grateful. I am super thankful to be here and can’t wait to get to work. I am excited.

“This organization, it’s the history. Everyone here, it’s a top-notch organization. It’s an amazing place to play. I love playing on this defense. I love the coaching staff. I love everything about it. I am so thankful to Mr. Rooney, Omar (Khan) for allowing me to be here for another four years. I am ready to get after it and get to work.”

The Steelers took a leap with Highsmith, drafting the FCS-level defensive end in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft and projecting his abilities to the outside linebacker spot of their 3-4 defense.

Highsmith repaid their faith with a high level of productivity, thriving alongside T.J. Watt to the tune of 22.5 sacks over three seasons and 14.5 in 2022.

When it came time for a new contract, the Steelers and Highsmith showed a lot of trust through that process. He was a full participant in OTAs and minicamp despite the negotiations, and now he’ll be rewarded with some stability in Pittsburgh.

“I am ready to get going at training camp,” Highsmith said. “I know Steelers Nation will be there in full effect. It’s here and I am excited. I am ready to get to work.”
