Another Steelers Center Target Off of Free Agent Board

The NFL’s legal tampering period opened up at noon on Monday and many free agents have already found new homes. This includes potential Steelers free agent target and former Tennessee Titans center Aaron Brewer. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Brewer signed a three-year, $21 million contract with the Miami Dolphins on Monday night.

Brewer joined a group of free agent centers that agreed to new contracts on Monday’s opening day of “free agency.” Like many of the other guys, Brewer was linked to the Steelers this offseason as a potential replacement for Mason Cole.

Last week, the Steelers hosted Mitch Morse on a visit but he ultimately agreed to a contract with Jacksonville Jaguars. Earlier on Monday, top-target Lloyd Cushenberry agreed to a deal with the Titans.

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan said during the 2024 NFL Combine that the team is confident in the ability of lineman James Daniels and Nate Herbig to play center if necessary but after the release of Mason Cole, center is at the top of the Steelers “needs” this offseason.

While Khan stated his confidence in his players, he also hinted at his desire to find the Steelers next “great” center.

“You know at the center position, there’s a high standard here,” Khan said in an interview with WPXI. “I got spoiled. Man, I was around Maurkice Pouncey and Jeff Hartings during my time here. Obviously, there’s Dermotti Dawson. There were plenty of great centers here. There’s a high standard, so we owe it to ourselves to look at everything to find the next great Steelers center.”

With many of the Steelers top-targets gone, the team is limited in regard to their next center. At this point, the team can opt to sign a lower tier starter or wait for the 2024 NFL Draft.
