Earlier this offseason, Winfrey was arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge in Harris County, Texas. In that April incident, he allegedly injured a woman he was dating by grabbing her with his hand.
In addition to his release by the Browns, Winfrey could face multiple suspensions from the NFL, if the league determines that he has violated its player conduct policy in regard to domestic abuse. NFL punishments can include a fine, suspension, community service, or a combination of the three.
Winfrey was the Browns’ fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma in the 2022 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, he played in 14 games and recorded 22 tackles, one tackle for a loss, two quarterback hits, one-half sack and two passes defended.
Winfrey and 2023 third-round pick Siaki Ika were expected to provide depth behind starters Jordan Elliott and Dalvin Tomlinson at defensive tackle this coming season.
Winfrey will be subject to waivers, so another team can choose to claim him.
