The Pittsburgh Steelers were just leaving the team hotel in Cincinnati on Monday, getting ready for their primetime game against the Bengals, when word started to circulate on social media about the death of legendary Steelers linebacker and Pro Football Hall of Famer Kevin Greene.

Greene, who played with the Steelers from 1993-95, made an impact in Pittsburgh on the field, helping lead the team to a Super Bowl in 1995, and off, where he remained a popular figure among the fanbase.

Some of the current Steelers players took some time from their preparation for the game to express their feelings about his passing on social media.

“It’s a Honor to Represent this legendary Number today for you and your family,” defense end Stephon Tuitt, who wears Greene’s former No. 91 uniform, wrote on Instagram. “I will make y’all proud. Prayers to Kevin Greene a legend.

“So sad to hear the news of Kevin Greene passing away,” defensive lineman Cam Heyward wrote on Twitter. “I only had a couple of interactions with him but when we did talk he always spoke with great energy and passion. May he be at peace and his family stay strong.

Some of the team’s former players expressed their feelings, as well.

Former Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle Willie Anderson was Greene’s teammate at Auburn before facing him for over a dozen seasons in the NFL.

“I was just saying, ‘this man needs a statue at Auburn,'” Anderson wrote on Twitter.
