Charges Dropped, NFL Clears Former Steelers Linebacker

Charges have been withdrawn in the domestic violence case against former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Jamir Jones and he will not face discipline from the NFL stemming from the April arrest that preceded his release by the Steelers.

Jones was arrested on April 12 at his Fort Lauderdale, Florida home and charged with charged with one count of battery, a first-degree misdemeanor. The alleged victim has been in a long-term relationship with Jones and was not willing to participate in the legal prosecution against him, according to Broward County court documents obtained by Steelers Now.

The case was disposed by prosecutors in May. An independent NFL investigation into the incident has not led to discipline for Jones, agent Carlos Hudson told Steelers Now. Jones is now free to sign with another team without the possible penalty of an NFL-mandated suspension hanging over his head.

The 25-year-old linebacker was a useful player for Pittsburgh in 2022 as the team’s No. 4 outside linebacker. He played in all 17 games, making 10 tackles and breaking up one pass. Jones also played on 57% of the club’s special teams snaps for the season.

A Rochester, New York native and Notre Dame alum, Jones first joined the Steelers during training camp in 2021 after a short stint with the Houston Texans in 2020. After he made the team to start the season, the Steelers put him on waivers after three weeks with the intention of signing him to their practice squad, but he was claimed by the Los Angeles Rams.

Jones played 10 games with the Rams before being waived again and claimed by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played two 2021 games in Jacksonville and spent most of the 2022 offseason with the Jaguars, but the Steelers re-claimed him on waivers on Sept. 1, 2022.

After releasing Jones, the Steelers signed free agent outside linebacker Markus Golden and drafted Nick Herbig in the fourth round out of Wisconsin.
