Two big questions were answered for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the team’s search for a general manager on Tuesday night, as it was reported that team vice president Omar Khan will be promoted to general manager and Philadelphia Eagles vice president Andy Weidl will be hired as assistant general manager. While the news answered those questions, it also created another one: What happens to Steelers pro scouting coordinator Brandon Hunt.
Seen as a rising star in the scouting field, Hunt was a front-runner for the Steelers GM job. With that position now going to Khan, and Weidl coming in from outside the organization, will Hunt be comfortable remaining in his previous role?
He will certainly have opportunities elsewhere if he chooses to explore them. In fact, Hunt recently interviewed with the Eagles for an undisclosed front-office position, that very well could be the one Weidl is vacating. He also interviewed with the Buffalo Bills for the assistant general manager slot that used to belong to Joe Schoen, before he was hired as the general manager of the New York Giants.
Despite not getting the GM job, Hunt remains a valuable part of the Steelers’ front office. If they can keep him in the fold while adding Weidl and promoting Khan, that would be a significant addition to the group that’s attempting to replace Kevin Colbert. If Hunt leaves, it would hurt the team’s scoring staff and sever the deep connection with the club’s history that Hunt maintains.
