Former Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Heath Miller has been out of the game for almost a decade, but he’ll now step back onto the gridiron as a high school head coach.

The St. Anne’s-Belfield School in Charlottesville, Virginia named Miller as the acting head coach for Saints Football in the 2024-25 season. Miller succeeds Joe Sandoe.

“I’m looking forward to leading the Saints Football program for the 2024 season. I hope to build off of the solid foundation that Coach Sandoe has worked tirelessly to build. It’s my goal to field a team that models the proper values on the field and off,” Miller said in a statement released on the school’s website.

Miller spent 11 seasons in Pittsburgh, recording 6,569 receiving yards and 45 receiving touchdowns and played a major role in the team’s Super Bowl XL and Super Bowl XLIII victories. He was inducted into the Steelers’ Hall of Honor in 2022.

“This is an invaluable experience for our football players to be coached by someone who has played the sport at the highest level,” says Head of School Autumn A. Graves, P. ’33 & ’35. “And while many will focus on his impressive stats as one of the Steelers’ most renowned players, I know what is most meaningful to Heath as a parent at our School is that he will have the opportunity to model excellent leadership, teamwork, and character development for the future generation.”

In the 2023 football season, Coach Sandoe led the team to a 6-3 record, with 11 players named to the All-State team, five players named to the All-Central VA team, and multiple players going on to play college football.

“We are excited for the passion and football experience that Heath will bring to our football program,” says Director of Athletics Seth Kushkin, P. ’24 & ’25. “And we are grateful to Joe for his wonderful leadership, tireless work, and passion he brought to our program.”

The statement released by the school said Miller and his wife, Katie Miller, have strong ties to the community as both are alumni of the University of Virginia. Their four children attend St. Anne’s-Belfield.
