In the Film Room with Joe Schobert: Breaking Down the Jarvis Landry Fumble

While the Steelers defense clamped down on the Browns to only allow a mere ten points to the league’s best rushing attack, the Browns were still in a position to potentially take the lead late in the game as they marched down the field. Not only was Cleveland in Steelers territory with around six minutes remaining, but they seemingly converted first downs, not at will, but rather easily. That was all until Joe Schobert showed up and stripped Jarvis Landry of the football.

Cam Sutton is playing outside leverage and with the quick slant, the Browns are able to get this one to Landry with ease. Baker Mayfield hits the throw-on beat and that is all that is really needed in order to complete this pass against this coverage and look from the Steelers. Schobert does a great job, however, of prying this out with his left hand and Taco Charlton comes from behind for the extra wiggle out. As he revealed, Schobert has noted that he has made this play multiple times against Landry in practice when he was with the Browns.

“Jarvis is a great competitor and a fierce athlete,” Schobert said. “He’s obviously protective of the ball as all ball carriers are in the NFL. I do remember a few times in training camps where I was back there, where he would catch the ball on little spot routes, juke me, and then I came from behind and punched the ball out a few times. So, maybe it’s just something I have on him, but in games I can’t remember him fumbling in any games. So, it’s a pretty rare thing to get done.”
