Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is officially a free agent. The New York Jets released the veteran quarterback on Wednesday, it was announced.

Rodgers is being designated as a post-June 1 cut, meaning the Jets will carry his $21 million cap hit until June 1, when it drops to $14 million. New York will then have a $35 million dead cap hit in 2026.

Rodgers is now free to sign with whichever team he so chooses, but it remains to be seen when that decision will be made.

The 41-year-old seems to have his options narrowed down between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants. However, there is reportedly no timetable for him to make a decision.

Rodgers’ decision doesn’t seem to be about money, despite a recent report that says he is seeking a $45 million per year contract. If that is true, the Steelers should be the easy choice.

Pittsburgh hasn’t won a playoff game since the 2016 season, but the Giants are coming off back-to-back losing seasons in which they had a combined record of 9-25.

That is unlikely the send-off Rodgers is likely imagining to end his illustrious NFL career that is highlighted by four NFL MVP awards, four first-team All-Pro selections, 10 Pro Bowl nods and a Super Bowl XLV championship and MVP.

Rodgers proved he still has some gas left in the tank in 2024 while passing for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns. It could be the perfect pairing as the Steelers are ready to win now with an aging roster.

If Rodgers ultimately decides to go to New York, Pittsburgh could entertain a reunion with quarterback Russell Wilson. But that is clearly not the Steelers top choice.

The question is: How long are the Steelers willing to wait?
