Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Tyler Murray has cleared waivers and reverted to the teamโ€™s injured reserve list, according to the NFL transactions report for Thursday.

Murray was waived with an injury designation on Wednesday after suffering a groin injury during practice on Tuesday. The Steelers signed rookie linebacker Easton Gibbs to replace him on the 90-man offseason roster.

Murray will now remain on the Steelersโ€™ injured reserve list until the end of the season or be released with an injury settlement. Since groin injuries are rarely season-ending, it seems likely that he will be granted his release. If he and the Steelers reach an injury settlement, Murray could theoretically return to the team, after three weeks beyond the injury settlement amount have passed.ย

The 25-year-old Memphis alum is in his second pro season and was on his second stint with the Steelers. Murray first joined the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 2023. In three preseason games with Cincy last summer, he recorded 10 tackles, but was cut by the Bengals and released from the practice squad on Sept. 5.

He caught on with the Steelers practice squad on Nov. 15, as the team was going through a multitude of injuries at the linebacker position. He spent only one week in Pittsburgh during the regular season, but the Steelers re-signed him to a future contract for 2024 in January.

Because Murray was waived/injured, he will now only earn the split portion of his contract while he is on the injured reserve list, providing the team salary cap savings if he remains there into the regular season.
