The Pittsburgh Steelers 2022 Schedule was released on Thursday as part of the NFL’s league-wide schedule release event.
The Steelers will open the season against the Cincinnati Bengals. It’ll be the first time in history that the two division rivals have faced off in Week 1, as well as the eighth consecutive season in a row that the Steelers have started the season on the road.
In Week 2, the Steelers will return to Pittsburgh and host the New England Patriots for their home opener. The Steelers and Patriots haven’t played since the season opener in 2019 which the Steelers lost 33-3 on the road.
Notably the team will play the Las Vegas Raiders at 8:15 p.m. on Christmas Eve. This will be exactly one day after the 50 year anniversary of the immaculate reception, arguably the defining play in NFL history.
In addition to the Christmas Eve game they will have the max of five prime time games in 2022. They will play at the Cleveland Browns (Week 3 – TNF), Miami Dolphins at home (Week 7 – SNF), Bengals at home (Week 11 – SNF) and at the Colts (Week 12 – MNF). All Thursday Night Football games will be exclusively streamed on Amazon this season.
Interestingly enough, they will not play their rival the Baltimore Ravens in a prime time game this season. Typically a prime time game, the two teams will instead play at 1:00 p.m. in their two games in Week 14 (at Pittsburgh) and Week 17 (at Baltimore).
The two teams played a prime time game each season from 2006-18, but haven’t played one since. They were scheduled to play the Thursday Night Football game on Thanksgiving in 2020, but a COVID outbreak among the Ravens forced the game to be pushed to the following Sunday.
Other than those games, some interesting ones to note include Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers coming to Pittsburgh on October 16th and the Week 18 game against the Browns not currently having a time suggesting a potential flex prime time game for the league.
The Steelers have the 12th toughest schedule in the NFL this season with an 2021 opponent’s winning percentage of .512. The Steelers will have their bye week mid season this year in Week 9.
