PITTSBURGH — After a long streak that set NFL records, Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson has finally registered a touchdown catch. Johnson broke open on a route, and Kenny Pickett found him to give the Steelers a late lead to put them up 20-16. Pittsburgh leaked him out as the far man on a bunch set, and he lost his man for the touchdown. He has put up an impressive game with seven receptions for 90 yards and now the touchdown. Pickett has found him as a security blanket, and he has rewarded him.

Last year, Diontae Johnson set the record for most receptions without a touchdown catch. Somehow, it just avoided him. But in a huge moment, the Steelers schemed Johnson open for the touchdown. Johnson’s return to the lineup after suffering a hamstring injury has allowed the Steelers offense to find something. It’s another streak that was snapped, just like the Steelers’ streak of opening-drive touchdowns.

Pittsburgh put up their first opening touchdown drive of the season. It is their first touchdown on an opening drive since December 18th, 2022, against the Carolina Panthers. Pittsburgh has not even scored points on their opening since last season’s game on January 1st against the Baltimore Ravens. That cold spell, along with Johnson’s, is now over.
