Steelers Land Michael Penix in New Mock Draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers land Washington QB Michael Penix Jr. in a new mock draft

The Steelers could dip into the quarterback class after the first round. While it does not appear the team is ready to move on from Kenny Pickett, adding a young quarterback even to develop as a backup makes sense. But just who could it be?

A.J. Schulte of Pro Football Network has the Steelers landing Washington quarterback Michael Penix in the second round of the NFL Draft after they took Kool-Aid McKinstry in the first round. He believes that Penix’s abilities bring a new element to the room entirely.

“It seems pretty obvious the Steelers don’t feel comfortable with Kenny Pickett or Mason Rudolph as their quarterback of the future. Michael Penix Jr.‘s draft stock varies from scout to scout, but I kept running out of reasons for him not landing with the Steelers. Penix adds a different element to the Steelers’ quarterback room with his downfield ability and pocket management,” Schulte wrote.

Penix’s Sugar Bowl game is one that everyone should point to if they want the Steelers to land him.

He completed 28 of 36 attempts for 430 yards and two touchdowns against them, showing off his best traits. Penix has an identity as a guy who can run a little hot and cold at times, but there is no doubt he was on in this game.

His vertical passing ability stuck out as he made tight window throws downfield all game. The most impressive part of his game? His pocket movement. Penix’s calm movements allowed him to distribute the ball to his excellent playmakers efficiently. It could easily boost his draft stock sharply, though some questionable medicals will arise. But his vertical passing with George Pickens could become a real weapon if that’s the route Pittsburgh wants to go.
