Steelers Named Best Fit for Former Cowboys WR Michael Gallup

The Pittsburgh Steelers will have to add a wide receiver or two before the start of the regular season. And while one of those additions will come through the NFL Draft, it would not be a surprise to see the team try to add someone else from the free agent pool. Tyler Boyd is the popular name thrown out there, but there are other veterans, too.

Pro Football Network named the best landing spots for some of the remaining free agents, and they believe that the former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Gallup could be an excellent fit.

“The Steelers traded WR Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers earlier this month, leaving them with George Pickens and a host of question marks on their wideout depth chart. Pittsburgh has signed Van Jefferson and Quez Watkins, neither of whom is an inspiring choice as a starting wide receiver.

Michael Gallup hasn’t been the same player since tearing his ACL in 2022 but has a 1,000-yard campaign (2019) on his ledger. The 6’1″, 200-pounder can give the Steelers more size on the perimeter and wouldn’t prevent them from drafting an early-round WR. Gallup has drawn free agent interest from the Panthers and Ravens since being released by the Dallas Cowboys in early March,” they wrote.

The Steelers could look to Gallup as someone who can at least give them efficient, meaningful snaps. In other words, a solid veteran buffer that upgrades on the guys they have in the room now. That could very well be the case for the team as they seek out another receiver.

The Steelers’ wide receivers room lacks more depth than most of the other rooms in the NFL as it stands. George Pickens and Calvin Austin III are the only returning receivers that received playing time in 2023. They’ll need to be diligent in finding an option that can help replace Diontae Johnson.

If the Steelers miss out on a receiver in free agency before the draft, they’ll have to invest in one early on, and given who they are scouting, that seems expected. And it wouldn’t be surprising if they selected one in the first round. Gallup’s signing would not prevent that, as he has seen better days, but it could offer them some much-needed assurance and depth.
