The End of the Flashy Steelers Training Camp Arrival

UNITY TWP., Pa — The Steelers arrived at Saint Vincent on Wednesday, but the days of the flashy entrance are gone. There were no helicopters, fire trucks, hard hats, or anything remotely close to that. Instead, the guys simply arrived in their rides and went about their business.

But one stuck out above the rest. It was Broderick Jones and his strategy towards getting to Latrobe. Arriving in late last night on a flight, Jones is still learning Pittsburgh and does not really know how to get around. So, naturally, Jones took an Uber ride from Pittsburgh to Saint Vincent. It was a modest fee of only $50 for the ride. An older gentleman recognized Jones right away, and it was one of the more unique experiences for a rookie.

“I had to Uber,” Jones said. “I still haven’t fully gotten settled in Pittsburgh so I’ve been ubering and staying in the hotels. I’m just trying to get everything in order. I knew camp was coming up so I had to get here. Most of the rookies came in last night. My flight got in late last night so I figured I find a ride and get there.”

Jones was stunned the man knew who he was. But he says that is a reflection of the Steelers culture around the area. The guys work hard and the fans reciprocate that with plenty of passion on Sundays. Jones is getting to know just how football crazy Pittsburgh can end up being.

“I was shocked the guy knew me because he was older,” Jones said. “People always tell me Pittsburgh is a sports city. Once he knew me, it wasn’t a shock but it was because it was older. But that shows this city’s spirit.”

Rookies would come to camp together. Nick Herbig, Keeanu Benton, and Nate Herbig all linked up to come together. The cars were not even flashy and could be vehicles your average middle class person could be driving around. That does not mean the entire thing was devoid of oddities, but the way the team now arrives is a much more lowkey version of what it used to be.
