Rising Steelers Front Office Star Tabbed as GM Candidate

The Steelers front office is coming off a solid first offseason fully together under the guidance of general manager Omar Khan. That includes assistant general manager Andy Weidl, who came over from the Philadelphia Eagles to help Khan’s scouting staff and put together a team with a growing number of ascending young players.

As a result, though, Weidl, who is thought of highly in NFL circles, could be a rising star who gets some looks as a general manager this offseason. One such opening that could bring him up to the general manager role is the Washington Commanders. Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post lists Weidl as a possible candidate for that job.

There are Steelers connections in Washington with new owner Josh Harris, a former Steelers minority owner. So, there is some familiarity there even though the overlap is limited since the Steelers changed the vision and personnel in the front office once Khan came on board.

Back in May, the 33rd team named 7 prime candidates to look out for in the 2024 hiring cycle and among the candidates is Weidl. With rave reviews coming out of the draft he has put together in both Philadelphia and what many perceive as an impressive one in Pittsburgh, Weidl has garnered plenty of traction.

Weidl is a Pittsburgh native who hails from Mount Lebanon. He started his career in 1998 as a player personnel assistant with the Steelers, under the tutelage of Tom Donahue and Bill Nunn. Since then, he has made stops with the New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens before moving to the Eagles in 2016. Weidl helped construct Super Bowl winners with the Eagles in 2017 and the Ravens in 2012.

As part of the rebuilt regime, Weidl is in charge of the scouting processes that the team uses, and so far, those have come along swimmingly with strong moves from all angles in the year.
