THE OTHER SIDE
Linebacker Logan Wilson is questionable but unexpected to play with a knee injury. Akeem Davis-Gaither will play alongside Germain Pratt in Cincinnati’s 4-2 Nickel sets, with Maema Njongmeta filling into the slot in the base defense.
Left Orlando Brown (knee/fibula) is also questionable despite being a full participant in practice on Friday. He’s expected to play, but Cody Ford will start if he cannot.
Defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins is out with a virus. Rookie Kris Jenkins Jr. is in line to make his fourth career start, with fellow rookie McKinnley Jackson moving up the depth chart, as well.
Reserve wide receiver Charlie Jones is doubtful with a groin injury.
THE LAST TIME
Mason Rudolph saved Christmas, as the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Cincinnati Bengals, 34-11 on Dec. 23 last year, with Rudolph throwing for two touchdowns in a Pittsburgh rout at Acrisure Stadium.
Rudolph hit George Pickens for an 86-yard touchdown on the second play of the game and also connected with him for a 44-yarder just before the half as the Steelers pulled away early. Rudolph fished 17 of 27 for 290 yards and Pickens caught four of those for 195 and the two scores. Najee Harris rushed 19 times for 78 yards and another touchdown.
Both Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase missed the game for the Bengals, while Tee Higgins continued his personal dominance of Pittsburgh in the losing effort. He caught five passes for 140 yards and a touchdown.
Mykal Walker, Eric Rowe and Myles Jack led a patchwork Steelers defense in tackles. Jack, Alex Highsmith and T.J. Watt all had sacks. Rowe, Highsmith and Patrick Peterson combined for three interceptions.
STEELERS-BENGALS SERIES
The Steelers lead the all-time series, 70-39-0, though recently, the series has been very even. The teams have split the last four games in the rivalry dating back to the 2020 season. The Steelers swept the Bengals last season, and Cincinnati swept in 2021, with the road teams winning in 2022 and the home teams winning in 2020.
Most of this series has intermittent periods of domination, usually by Pittsburgh. Before this stretch, the Steelers had won 11 in a row in the series, for example. Cincinnati went 15-6 against the Steelers from 1980-90.
PITTSBURGH CONNECTIONS
Cornerback Mike Hilton spent five seasons in Pittsburgh from 2016-20, becoming an NFL regular after joining the Steelers as a twice-released undrafted free agent. Overlooked because of his size, the 5-foot-9 Hilton became a mainstay in Pittsburgh, playing in 59 games for the Steelers over his five seasons and becoming a run-down slot specialist, with a solid mix of coverage instincts, run-stopping ability and a surprising proclivity for rushing the passer.
Safety Geno Stone is a New Castle, Pa. native. Stone is in his first season in Cincinnati after spending his first four years with the Baltimore Ravens. Stone has seven interceptions in his second season as a starter for the Ravens in 2023, leading to a two-year, $14 million contract with the Bengals this past offseason.
Long snapper Cal Adomitis is in his third seasons as Cincinnati’s starter. The Pittsburgh native, Central Catholic and Pitt alum took over after an injury in 2022 against the Steelers, and hasn’t looked back.
