LANDOVER, Md. — Cameron Sutton made his highly anticipated 2024 season debut Sunday, playing a key role in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ narrow 28-27 victory over the Washington Commanders in the nation’s capital. After serving an eight-game suspension, Sutton returned to the field with a strong performance after missing the first eight games of the season while serving an NFL suspension for domestic violence.
Sutton, who was drafted by the Steelers in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, played with Pittsburgh from 2017 to 2022 before signing a three-year, $33 million contract with the Detroit Lions in March 2023. However, his time in Detroit was short-lived. In March 2024, Sutton was released by the Lions after an arrest warrant was issued for him in Florida related to a domestic abuse charge. Despite the controversy, the Steelers decided to bring Sutton back on a one-year contract in June 2024, a decision that raised eyebrows but is now looking like a solid move.

In Sunday’s game, Sutton showcased his versatility by playing all over the Steelers’ secondary. He lined up as an outside cornerback, in the slot, and in nickel and dime packages, filling in at various spots to help his team. Sutton even contributed on special teams early in the game, further emphasizing his willingness to do whatever it takes to contribute.
“It feels good. It feels really good,” Sutton said when asked how it felt to return to the field. His performance Sunday proved that, despite the long layoff, he is ready to make a difference once again for the Steelers.
When starting cornerback Donte Jackson was forced out of the game with a hamstring injury, Sutton stepped up and played nearly every snap in the second half. One of his key moments came in the third quarter when the Steelers were trailing 24-21. On 2nd-and-10, Sutton broke up a pass intended for rookie wide receiver Luke McCaffrey, forcing the Commanders to punt. The play helped stall Washington’s drive and kept the Steelers within striking distance. After the game, when asked how he sees his role moving forward, Sutton kept a level-headed approach.
“I’m just taking it one game at a time,” he said. “Whatever roles or opportunities present themselves, I’ll be ready for them.”
His mentality of staying ready for any situation, along with his versatility, will likely keep him on the field as the season progresses. Sutton added that the defense prides itself on getting the ball back to the offense, something that he helped contribute to Sunday’s win. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin also praised Sutton’s football IQ, noting that it allows him to play in multiple roles across the defense.
“His football intellect lets him play anywhere,” Tomlin said earlier this week.
Sutton’s familiarity with the Steelers’ defense, as well as his strong bond with teammates like safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, should make him a valuable asset moving forward.
As the season continues, Sutton’s ability to fill multiple roles within the secondary, combined with his leadership and experience, will be a key factor in the Steelers’ defense, and it looks like Sutton will continue to play an important part in Pittsburgh’s push for the playoffs. With his adaptability and strong work ethic, Sutton is poised to make a big impact the rest of the way.
