Joining Inside Training Camp Live on Tuesday, veteran Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Patrick Peterson said rookie Joey Porter Jr. is working hard on and off the field to prepare for the season.

“Joey is just a sponge. Joey loves the game. Joey wants to be a guy that’s recognized in this game,” Peterson told NFL Network’s Colleen Wolfe and Brian Baldinger. “He’s asking me questions each and every day — you guys are gonna see today when we have downtime — he’s asking me how he can get better with his technique. Like I told him when we first got here: He’s the future. At some point, you’re going to be out there on the field and you’re going to have to take the bull by the horns. And not only take the bull by the horns, but be able to help the other guys come along as well.”

While some veterans might be resistant to pass along knowledge to a rookie at the same position, Peterson has no problem showing Porter the ropes of what it takes to be an NFL cornerback.

“No doubt about it and that’s the Steeler way,” he said of mentoring Porter Jr. “For me, being the people person that I am, I just fell right into it. I want to see the next generation be successful, I want to see the guy behind me become better as well because you never know when we might need him.”

? The Pittsburgh Steelers hosted members of their alumni at Tuesday’s training camp practice.

“What an amazing group of @steelers legends. Thanks for being out here with us today, fellas,” Mike Tomlin wrote on Instagram.

? Former Steelers cornerback and current team scout Ike Taylor was one of the alumni players at Tuesday’s practice. After practice, Taylor gave some pointers to cornerback Joey Porter Jr. Taylor was teammates with Joey Porter Sr. during the 2000s.

“Da past and the future… @1ofahkine & @joeyporterjr, Taylor wrote on Instagram. Porter responded back, “Unc Ike ??.”

? In response to George Pickens’ viral one-handed catch over Joey Porter Jr. at Tuesday’s practice, Jordan Schultz of The Score revealed an interesting tidbit on the second-year wide receiver out of Georgia.

“Asked an AFC GM about #Steelers WR George Pickens: ‘He has so much talent. I’d argue he’s one of the more gifted receivers I’ve seen in the last 10 years… He’s gonna be a special player,'” Schultz tweeted.

? Mike Tomlin is intrigued by the heated feud between Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton and New York Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. Payton made national headlines last week, telling USA Today that Hackett’s 15-game run with the Broncos last season was “one of the worst coaching jobs in the history of the NFL” and that there were “20 dirty hands” around quarterback Russell Wilson. Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers snapped back earlier this week, telling Pete Schrager of the NFL Network that Payton needs to “keep my coaches’ names out of his mouth.”

“All I know is that I hope that (Week 5) game between the Broncos-Jets is on national TV, in a time where everybody can watch it because I want to watch that football game, Tomlin said, as told by NBC Sports’ Peter King in an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show on Monday.

? Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt showed the NFL Network’s Colleen Wolfe and Brian Baldinger some techniques that have made him a Defensive Player of the Year.

? Happy Birthday to former Steelers cornerback Al-Hajj Shabazz, born on August 2, 1992 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Shabazz signed with the Indianapolis Colts in 2015 after going undrafted out of Division II West Chester. After short stints with the Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Shabazz signed a futures contract with the Steelers on Feb. 4, 2016. Shabazz played seven games with the Steelers (two different stints) and one game with the Houston Texans in 2016. The 2016 season was Shabazz’s lone full year in the NFL.
