October 25 2009: Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes (10) carries the ball. The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Minnesota Vikings by a score of 27 to 17 at Heinz Field, Pittsburgh, PA.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver and Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes coached up George Pickens at Saturday’s training camp practice. Holmes, who’s been extra involved in the Steelers alumni program, mentored Pickens while they were going through releases and route stems.

🏈 Former Steelers outside linebacker James Harrison is honored to be a member of the Steelers’ Hall of Honor Class of 2023.

“It’s hard to express how extremely honored I am to be mentioned alongside this group of Steelers Greats. Truly Blessed,” Harrison wrote on Instagram.

🏈 Pitt men’s head basketball coach Jeff Capel was at the Steelers training camp practice at Saint Vincent College on Saturday. Mike Tomlin shared a photo of himself with Capel at the practice on Instagram.

“I never take for granted the support and friendship with those in the Pittsburgh sports coaching fraternity and truly appreciate @jeffcapel for taking the time to come to camp today,” Tomlin wrote.

🏈 NBC Sports’ Peter King stopped by Saint Vincent College on his training camp tour and interviewed Kenny Pickett and Mike Tomlin.

🏈 Mike Tomlin talked to the NFL Network’s Judy Battista about what he wants quarterback Kenny Pickett to do in Year 2. Tomlin said earlier this week that Pickett has to be what we need him to be.

“We need him to do fundamental things well. We need him to take care of the football. We need him to communicate,” Tomlin said. “I’ll never ask him not to be himself but be his best self. Smile in the face of adversity. Understand his perspective, often times it’s his unit’s perspective, and own that component of the job. He’s at a good place to absorb some of those things. A year ago, he was really focusing on service level things, assignment responsibilities and so forth. And now because of his experience, he probably has a perspective where we can add to his do-to list and he’s absorbing more of the responsibility that comes with being him, and that’s what I meant by it.”

🏈 Former Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor congratulated James Harrison on making the Steelers’ Hall of Honor Class of 2023.

“@jharrison9292 congrats on @steelers HOH…2023. Ya a different breed bruh… So glad to be a teammate of yours…,” Taylor tweeted.

🏈 Mike Tomlin gave a shoutout to Aaron Smith for being selected to the Steelers’ Hall of Honor Class of 2023 prior to Saturday’s training camp practice.

🏈 On the heels of Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay blasting running backs who believe they’re being devalued and not compensated fairly, Colts running back Jonathan Taylor has formally requested a trade after meeting with Irsay, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Irsay texted Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, “We’re not trading Jonathan… end of discussion. Not now and not in October!”

🏈 Former Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell told Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press that New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is a “bottom tier” quarterback and doesn’t understand how he can get paid but Saquon Barkley can’t.

“There are average quarterbacks, [Daniel Jones] is in the bottom tier. And I’m not here trying to talk bad about Daniel Jones, I’m just trying to being real,” Bell said. “He’s in the bottom tier. Saquon is in the top tier of his position, so how does that make sense?”

📅 On this date in 1983, the Steelers defeated the New Orleans Saints, 27-14, in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. The Steelers offense stymied the Saints defense and scored 17 unanswered points in the first quarter. The Steelers would go on to score 10 more points during the contest. New Orleans battled back, but Pittsburgh’s defense, anchored by Hall of Famers Jack Lambert and Mel Blount, were able to thwart a fourth quarter comeback by the Saints. The full game is on YouTube.

🎂 Happy Birthday to Steelers inside linebacker Cole Holcomb, born on July 30,  1996 in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. After four seasons with the Washington Commanders, Holcomb signed a three-year, $18 million deal with the Steelers back in March during free agency.

Holcomb’s 2022 season was cut short thanks to a foot injury sustained in Week 4 against the Green Bay Packers. He tried to rehab it and get back on the field, his injury was not healing enough for that to happen, so Holcomb underwent surgery in early December, ending his season. When Holcomb agreed to sign with the Steelers as a free agent this spring, they wanted him to come to Pittsburgh so they could examine him and make sure his foot was healing sufficiently.

Holcomb was limited during OTAs and minicamp, but he confirmed earlier this week that he’s a full go now. Holcomb, who’s known to be an efficient run-stopper, recorded an impressive 142 total tackles with Washington in 2021. He also had two interceptions and seven passes defended that season.

🎥 In honor of former Steelers center Ray Mansfield making the Steelers’ Hall of Honor Class of 2023, Old Time Football posted a clip of when Mansfield converted an extra point in the Steelers’ 40-14 divisional round win over the Baltimore Colts in 1976.
