Omar Khan is having a strong first summer as Pittsburgh Steelers general manager and left tackle Dan Moore Jr. is showing big improvement for his second season.
Omar Khan hit the hat trick of reasonable contract extensions when he signed Diontae Johnson this week, completing his first big test as general manager.
Dan Moore Jr. had a rocky rookie season as the starting left tackle, but the team showed faith in him by not adding competition, and Moore has responded with a solid training camp.
On the other hand, starting quarterback Mitch Trubisky has been inconsistent, leaving the team’s quarterback competition without a true leader through two weeks.
The Steelers had to cancel their Friday Night Lights practice at Latrobe Memorial Stadium on Friday night due to thunderstorms.
BetOnline.ag has Mitch Trubisky listed as the heavy favorite to be QB1 when the Steelers play the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1 at Paul Brown Stadium. Trubisky’s odds are at -250, while Kenny Pickett is at +170. Mason Rudolph wasn’t even listed.
Based on experience, Bill Cowher thinks Trubisky or Rudolph should be the Steelers’ starting quarterback in 2022. He doesn’t think it would be ideal to start Pickett right away.
“Ideally, you don’t put that kind of pressure on a young quarterback like Kenny Pickett,” Cowher said. “I think he’s going to be very good in the long run, but bringing him along slowly and confidently is going to be very, very important.”
Former Steelers running back coach James Saxon is facing two domestic battery charges from an alleged incident in May. Saxon, who is currently a running backs coach for the Arizona Cardinals, is on paid administrative leave as he awaits a court date. Cardinals head coach Kliff Klingsbury said on Friday the team was aware of the situation when it happened. Saxon was the Steelers’ running back coach from 2014-18.
A bunch of Steelers Hall of Famers reunited in Canton for this year’s induction ceremony, which will take place on Saturday.
The Steelers will have their 10th practice of training camp at Chuck Noll Field on the campus of St. Vincent College at 1:55 p.m. Nick Farabaugh, Ed Thompson
