Steelers Draft Digest: Tuipulotu Visit, Broderick Jones Dream Scenario?

The Steelers draft brass sets another visit and a mock draft could have Pittsburgh getting their first-round dream scenario occurring right for them.

🏈: A new pre-draft visit has emerged, as the Steelers are set to host USC DL Tuli Tuipulotu at some point. After USC Pro Day, Tuipulotu revealed that the Steelers are one of the teams that he will have visits with moving forward. The Ravens are on the list of visits as well. A productive player, he racked up 13.5 sacks and 22.5 tackles for loss, and is the brother of Eagles defensive lineman Marlon Tuipulotu. So, that checks the football bloodlines part of things, and his athleticism could be an easy draw for the Steelers.

🏈: The Steelers went out to Ames for Iowa State Pro Day on Tuesday. However, they did not just go there on Tuesday, but arrived on Monday night. According to Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network, standout Iowa State edge rusher Will McDonald dined with the Steelers. Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin watched with a keen eye on the edge rusher who fits as a prototypical 3-4 outside linebacker.

Meanwhile, Austin worked out both wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson and defensive back DB Anthony Johnson, who says the Steelers and other teams view him as a nickel defender. With Pittsburgh needing a slot cornerback, this is something to watch for moving forward.

🏈: In Daniel Jeremiah’s new mock draft, the Steelers draft gets enhanced by what you could call a dream scenario. While Joey Porter Jr. is there, so is Georgia offensive tackle Broderick Jones, and that is just who Jeremiah has the Steelers pouncing on immediately with him on the board.

“This would be a dream scenario for the Steelers as they continue to overhaul their offensive line this offseason,” Jeremiah wrote.

With the recent signings of Isaac Seumalo and Nate Herbig as well as reported interest in Orlando Brown, it would be little surprise to see Pittsburgh land a top tackle. Should Jones fall to 17, it would feel like he is the natural pick for the Steelers at this spot.

🏈: The Steelers lost a 2024 compensatory pick by signing Patrick Peterson after losing Cam Sutton. However, they can easily gain it back with some other losses, but they should still be plenty active in free agency, so the question of whether they will have a compensatory pick still seems to be up in the air. In addition, they are indirect cancellations according to Nick Korte, meaning they are across different rounds.

🏈: Star cornerback Devon Witherspoon out of Illinois did not participate in the pro day for the Fighting Illini today after suffering a hamstring injury in NFL Combine training. That leaves Witherspoon with his own personal workout date on the 6th of April, where teams will get to see the star workout and test on his own. However, until then, they will go without those numbers.
