The Pittsburgh Steelers have hired Pat Meyer to be their offensive line coach, the team announced on Tuesday.
Meyer, 49, is a Youngstown, Ohio native that spent the last two seasons coaching with the Carolina Panthers, alongside new wide receivers coach Frisman Jackson. Carolina is revamping its offensive coaching staff after moving on from Joe Brady and replacing him as offensive coordinator with Ben McAdoo.
Before his time in Carolina, Meyer worked with the Los Angeles Chargers, Buffalo Bills and Chicago Bears in the NFL, spent one season withe Montreal Alouettes of the CFL and was with Colorado State, Florida State, NC State and Memphis at the collegiate level. In addition to serving as an offensive line coach, he has been a strength and conditioning coach, offensive coordinator and run game coordinator.
With the Chargers, he coached alongside Steelers tight ends coach Alfredo Roberts. His first season at Memphis overlapped with former Steelers defensive coordinator Keith Butler.
Meyer played two seasons of pro football after a four-year career at Colorado State, where he was an all-WAC offensive lineman.
Meyer will replace Adrian Klemm, who left mid-season in 2021 to take the same position with Oregon. The Steelers will also need to replace Chris Morgan, who had been Klemm’s assistant and filled in as interim offensive line coach late in the season. Morgan left to take the offensive line coach position with the Chicago Bears.
There had been speculation that the Steelers might be interested in re-hiring former offensive line coach Mike Munchak, who was not retained by the Denver Broncos. Munchak, a Pro Football Hall of Famer from his time as a player with the Houston Oilers, coached in Pittsburgh from 2014-18 and helped develop players such as Alejandro Villanueva, Maurkice Pouncey and Ramon Foster. It’s unclear if Munchak was ever seriously considered for the vacancy.
Meyer makes two new members of the Steelers coaching staff for 2022, along with Jackson. In addition to an assistant offensive line coach, the team also has a vacancy in the secondary, where Teryl Austin was promoted to defensive coordinator.
