Steelers Injury Updates: Devin Bush Misses Practice, Cam Heyward Returns

PITTSBURGH — Devin Bush has not had the preseason he has wanted yet, and Monday did not make it better. Mike Tomlin said that the Michigan product suffered an ankle injury that held him out of practice on Monday. That is not what Bush needed to happen.

“He’s got an ankle but that can be described as day-to-day,” Tomlin said.

Devin Bush will now hope to get back as soon as possible. In other injury news, Cam Heyward (left ankle) returned to the field. Heyward confirmed that and says he still feels really good. So, it would appear that the Steelers avoided serious injury there. Meanwhile, Alex Highsmith (ribs) is day-to-day and getting closer. Highsmith said he was a limited participant on Monday. It should not be that far off until Highsmith finds his way back onto the practice field in full capacity.

Tomlin also addressed what was going on with offensive lineman Joe Haeg. Haeg did play against the Jaguars at all, and did not practice on Monday. Tomlin noted that Haeg was put into the concussion protocol after practice on Thursday.

“He’s got a concussion and he’s in the protocol,” Tomlin said. “I think he’s getting close to a return.”

Haeg’s injury can partially explain the Steelers’ signing of Adrian Ealy earlier in the day. While Tomlin did mention he is not an injury expert, he is still optimistic that Haeg can return in short order.

Meanwhile, rookie wide receiver Calvin Austin III should return soon. Tomlin is ‘hopeful’ that they will get him back, but they will not put him out there until they completely confirm that he is ready to go. Austin said earlier on Monday that he felt great, and was ready to go once given the green light. He has yet to play in any preseason games due to the injury.
