Steelers Release Tight End after One Week on Roster
The Pittsburgh Steelers have released tight end Izaiah Gathings after one week on the team's roster, making room for Cam Sutton.
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have cut ties with tight end Izaiah Gathings after just one week on the squad, the team announced on Wednesday.
The Steelers signed Gathings on May 29, and he participated in three practices with the team before his release on Wednesday. Gathings was cut to make room for Cameron Sutton on the team’s 90-man offseason roster.
A second-year pro out of Middle Tennessee State, Gathings signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent to start his career last spring. He was released by the Jets during training camp and landed with the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad last December.
Gathings was on the Kansas City practice squad when the Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII, but did not appear in a game with the club. The Chiefs re-signed Gathings to a future contract for 2024, but they cut Gathings early in May, allowing him to join Pittsburgh.
The Steelers did not have an obvious need for more tight ends on their depth chart, with their top four players — Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington, Connor Heyward and Rodney Williams II — all returning from last year and veteran free agent MyCole Pruitt added to the mix.
Gathings starting his career as a wide receiver at Gardner-Webb. He transferred to Middle Tennessee for his redshirt junior year in 2021. He caught 24 passes for 302 yards in 2021 and 60 passes for 559 yards in 2022.
The 6-foot-3, 233-pound receiver ran a 4.67-second 40-yard dash at his pro day and posted a 36-inch vertical and a 10-foot-1 broad jump.
The Steelers’ offseason roster is at the maximum of 90 players, though they have a roster exemption for German outside linebacker Julius Welschof and can carry 91 players this offseason.
