PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers defensive captain Cam Heyward got back to work on Thursday, just six weeks after he had core muscle surgery to repair an injury commonly known as a sports hernia.

Heyward was injured in the Steelers’ Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers and underwent surgery on Sept. 14. He was expected to miss eight weeks with the injury, and appears to be right on that schedule.

Heyward will likely not be able to play in the team’s Week 8 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars this Sunday, but a Week 9 return for Thursday Night Football against the Tennessee Titans on Nov. 2 certainly seems possible. If not then, he will doubtlessly return for the team’s Week 10 home game against the Green Bay Packers.

At practice on Thursday, Heyward was working with the regular group of defensive linemen in drills supervised by head coach Mike Tomlin, defensive line coach Karl Dunbar and outside linebackers coach Denzel Martin.

Heyward’s health and level of conditioning will be factors in when he will be able to return. He must be activated from the injured reserve list in the next 21 days.
