Steelers safety Jalen Elliott

The Steelers have signed former Lions and Patriots safety Jalen Elliott, the team announced on Tuesday prior to the team’s practice in Latrobe.

Elliott is a safety out of Notre Dame. Only 25, he was an undrafted free agent in the class of 2020. He found time with the Detroit Lions in 2020 and 2021 and then spent last year with both the New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders. Elliott has 12 total tackles in his NFL career. He was hosted as part of the mass of defensive backs late last week for private workouts.

While at Notre Dame, Elliott played in 44 games while racking up 6 interceptions and 11 pass deflections. His Junior season was his most productive with four interceptions and seven pass deflections. Over his career, he posted 176 tackles with the Fighting Irish.

The Steelers have looked to sign plenty of defensive back depth. Minkah Fitzpatrick is still working his way back from his long personal absence while Keanu Neal and Damontae Kazee are sporting injuries. This could be a move to allow the team to have more depth for when they play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday. Tre Norwood suffered a lower leg injury on Sunday. Currently, the starters at safety would entail Miles Killebrew and Kenny Robinson, the latter of which has had a standout camp in the absence of the regulars.
