Steelers Suffer another Offensive Line Injury
The Pittsburgh Steelers have suffered another offensive line injury, as backup tackle Dylan Cook was in a walking boot on Tuesday.
PITTSBURGH — Another Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman has suffered an injury, as second-team tackle Dylan Cook was wearing a walking boot before practice on Tuesday.
Cook played 23 snaps on offense and two on special teams in the Steelers’ Week 2 preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. He was not obviously injured during play and head coach Mike Tomlin did not list him among the team’s injured players after the game.
But Cook was in the Steelers locker room on Tuesday before practice with a walking boot on his left foot and ankle, bringing his injury status for this week’s preseason finale against the Detroit Lions and beyond into question.
Cook, 26, entered training camp as the Steelers’ fourth offensive tackle, behind starters Dan Moore Jr. and Broderick Jones and first-round draft pick Troy Fautanu. The Steelers have been moving Cook back and forth from left tackle to right tackle, and also working him as an extra tight end, as they prepare him to someday take over the swing backup tackle position.
“Every team needs a swing tackle,” Cook said in May. “If that’s a spot I can fill this year, I’m more than happy to do it and I’m prepared to do it.”
Right now, the Steelers are likely more concerned with filling out their offensive line depth chart than they are about specific roles. Fautanu is expected to miss at least another week with the left MCL sprain he suffered during the preseason opener. Starting center Nate Herbig could miss the entire season after tearing his rotator cuff. Jones has been hampered by a right elbow injury that has him wearing an awkward brace.
Cook worked as the second-team left tackle behind Moore on Saturday, with Anderson Hardy at right tackle. Newly acquired TyKeem Doss has been taking drills as the third-team left tackle, and could be in line for a greater role if Cook’s injury persists.
