THE LAST TIME
Playing on a short week after a COVID-19 outbreak amongst the Baltimore Ravens repeatedly delayed their previous game, the Pittsburgh Steelers dropped the first game of the 2020 season, losing 23-17 to the Washington Football Team on Dec. 7, 2020.
The Steelers did not trail until the fourth quarter and led 17-10 until Alex Smith hit Logan Thomas for a 15-yard touchdown to tie the game with just under 10 minutes to play.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin elected not to try a 46-yard field goal with rookie kicker Matthew Wright, and Ben Roethlisberger threw incomplete on fourth down. Washington turned the good field position into a go-ahead field goal. On the ensuing possession, Roethlisberger’s pass was tipped and intercepted by former Steelers linebacker Jon Bostic to seal the win for Washington.
STEELERS-WASHINGTON SERIES
The Steelers are 33-43-3 all-time against the Washington franchise, dating all the way back to when it played in Boston, with the first game between the clubs coming in 1933. The Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Redskins split two games that season, with the visitors winning both times. The trip to Boston, a 16-14 win at Fenway Park, was the first road victory in the history of the Pittsburgh franchise. The Steelers are 30-38-3 against the club since it moved from Boston to Washington ahead of the 1937 season.
The teams shared a division for most of their early history, and those results were heavily tilted in favor of the Redskins. From 1937 to 1946, Washington rattled off a 13-1-1 streak against Pittsburgh.
Since Pittsburgh moved to the AFC in 1970, games between the franchises have become less frequent, and have favored the Steelers. Pittsburgh is 8-4 against Washington since the merger, and won six straight games against the D.C. club from, 1997 to 2016.
In terms of games played in the nation’s capital, Washington is 20-13-3. Just two games have been played between the teams at Northwest Stadium (formerly FedEx Field). The Steelers won there in 2008 and 2016.
